| They are
an easy breed to train as they love to please, they can swim very well and will,
if given the opportunity, dive in a puddle. The
Nature of the Breed SWD's,
whilst getting on with most other animals out of their home, can be dominant and
possessive with other dogs in their home environment. They tend to use their herding
abilities, (barking, pushing and nipping) whilst out exercising with kennelmates
and some breeds with gentler natures find this very intimidating. They also tend
to be very possessive of their owners and do not really like to share attention. Because
they love to be part of the family they do not really make ideal kennel dogs,
becoming noise and destructive; they much prefer the comforts of indoor life,
although they should not be confused with couch potatoes, as they need constant
exercise and stimulation to be truly happy. We
must remember their heritage, they are working dogs, that enjoy herding and guarding. The
grooming of the Spanish Water Dog is very easy as they do not need a lot of maintenance
on their coat, it should be clipped each year to improve the texture of the coat.
The breed does not shed its coat. They are a healthy breed and there are no known
problems at this time. If
you are considering purchasing puppy for show purposes then coat maintenance is
slightly different, please refer to show section. For
more detailed information on the breed please phone: 01507 466867 and ask for
